Having ruled over Caladan bases on sea and air power, he realised the importance of "desert power" on  maintaining his rule over Arrakis, trying to befriend the Fremen, but he was betrayed by a Suk doctor and died when Baron Vladimir Harkonnen regained control of the planet based on help by the Emperor's Sardaukars.
