The spacing
Guild is one leg of the political tripod maintaining
the Great Convention |
The Guild was the second mental-physical training
school (the other was Bene
Gesserit) formed after the Batleriad Jihad.
The Guild monopoly on space travel and transport
is taken as the beginning point of the Imperial
Calendar.
The Guild Steersmen were able to navigate huge
Heighliners, and were the only ones to make possible
interstellar journeys. This was accomplished because
they possessed some amount of prescience, fired
by the consumption of huge quantities of melange.
Thus they could predict the close future, so that
they could foresee and avoid perilous paths in
their trips.
The guild had implied a monoply on space travel.
On the other hand their navigators had become
totally dependant on spice. Thus it was made possible
to Paul
Atreides and his Fremen
to "encage" and blackmain the Guild
during the battle of Arrakeen , threatenting them
that they would destroy the spice production.
Important aspect: The Guild navigators had lost
their human appearence and they were more like
men-fish living in liquid-filled tanks. They would
not normally go to encounters with other humans
themselves nbut they would rather use a well-organized
network of agents.
