House Atreides

For those acquainted with classic mythology and the works of Homer, house Atreides is but the house of Agamemno Atreides, Greek general in the Troyan war perfectly described in Homer's Iliada. For all others, house Atreides is the ruling dynasty on Caladan for 20 generations. The Atreides had based their suppremacy on their air and sea power.

Most important trait to the Atreides was doudtlessly the close bond between the governor's and their people. Atreides could give their lives' water eagerly for the once they chose as friends and in return they gained the absolute devotion of their subjects.

Their main enemy house was the Harkonnen, guided in the time of the first Dune novel by the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

Just in 10,190 the Atreides were ordered by the Emperor to move on to planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. That was the start of the conspiracy that led to Duke Leto's death in the hands of the Harkonnen, but also to a set of events ending with the Atreides mounting on the throne of the imperium.

Important notes:

  • The Atreides were part of the Landsraad counsil
  • Duke Leto Atreides was distant cousin of the Emperor
  • The Atreides contained in their bloodline many of the genes that were critical for the Bene Gesserit program of human breeding. Indeed Paul Atreides was supposed to be the prefinal step before the birth of the Kwisatz Haderach, if born in the flesh of a girl as the sister hood initially intended.

Info here was based on Frank Herber's Dune.
