Livermore Public Library Invites Community
to Join “Livermore Reads Together: The Dune Books”
The Livermore Public Library is pleased to announce the second annual “Livermore Reads Together” community-wide reading program, featuring the science fiction series Dune. The community of Livermore is encouraged to read one of the books in the Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, or Kevin J. Anderson series, and join their neighbors by participating in book discussions and free events for children and adults during the month of February 2008. Copies of books and event schedules are available at all Livermore Public Library locations.
Dune, an award winner written in 1965, is considered to be one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time – an entirely new kind of science fiction that combined futurism with a self-contained new world, an elaborate plot, and intricately developed characters. Frank Herbert subsequently penned five Dune books, and inspired numerous sequels, a film adaptation, two television mini-series, games, and more.
The stories in the Dune series reflect the major events that shape the world today: a civilization dependant on the sparse resources in a remote region controlled by religious fanatics. Like all great literature, the stories in the series encourage discussion on weighty issues such as the role of family in politics, man’s relationship with God, and what it means to be human.
Livermore Reads Together: The Dune Books is generously sponsored by The Friends of the Livermore Public Library. For additional events check the library’s website at www.livermore.lib.ca.us For more information contact Rosemary Dukelow at 925-373-5514.
